Who I am

Hi, I’m Ryan, a U.S.-born consultant who has built a 30+ year career working deeply with nonprofits, social enterprises, philanthropy, and civil society. For the past decade, I've focused primarily on social impact organizations in Central and Eastern Europe.

I’ve spent years working with social impact leaders, teams, and organizations across this region—listening, interpreting (literally and figuratively), and helping people navigate strategy, fundraising, communication, and burnout and success. A lot of the most useful things I’ve learned aren’t in guides or reports. They’re passed along, shared privately, or experience that’s lived through.

This space on Substack is one channel for me to harmonize my professional notes from the field with my personal journal from my life and travels. Most of what I share here is longform—not lists, not platitudes. I write from practice, not theory, though sometimes the two intersect.

That’s it. No daily deluge. No hidden community. No comment threads. Just a small, steady feed of signal in a field that’s too often flooded with noise.

Beyond that, I write essays on client-centered work, consultant-centered reflection, and sector-level insight. The story of how I sync my Black, Gen X, American South and Ivy League selves is also a journey I’m exploring in all of its messy facets, contradictions, cultural contours and creative nuances. I'm hoping to share my learnings, experiences, and insights with other professionals and those curious about the region.

Some vistors and readers might not agree with me—and that’s fine. I’m often thinking out loud in public, sometimes to inform, sometimes to test or reassess my own beliefs. There’s too much inspiration and creativity to ignore in the world. That’s why I also like to amplify voices and approaches that normally get ignored or overlooked.

If that sounds like something you’d value, subscribe—either free or paid. And if not, that’s fine too. This niche isn’t for everyone, and I won’t try to pretend otherwise.

But if you decide it’s for you, I welcome you here. You’ll know pretty quickly what’s in store ahead.

In sum

I’m not here to preach, echo, silo or offer easy answers. Instead, I show up with straightforward honesty and a commitment to practical solutions grounded in real experience. I write with a world-weary, pragmatic optimism that comes from my experience. My voice is often unvarnished but authentic, quirky but densely layered. I'm an imperfect, spontaneous, reflective, and restless work in progress. Expect something of some sort every few days.

Some of what I share will be directly useful. Some of it might just validate something you’ve felt but couldn’t quite name. Some posts will be light-touch. Others might go deep. All of it is grounded in real practice, not posturing.
